FAQ deep dive

Concrete scanning vs utility locating—which do I need?

Both use GPR-family methods, but the purchase order, antenna choices, and deliverables differ. Use this guide to book the right entry point before you cut concrete or open a trench.

Scope & limitations

Neither service replaces OHIO811 when a ticket is required. For the relationship between tickets and GPR, see does GPR replace Ohio 811.

Choose concrete scanning when…

  • The hazard lives inside or under a slab—cores, post-tension concerns, slab-embedded conduit, radiant tubing risk.
  • You need mark-out in square feet tied to a floor plan or core schedule.

Start on concrete scanning; antenna tradeoffs for slabs are summarized in GPR antenna frequency: utility vs slab.

Choose outdoor utility locating when…

  • The question is plan-view routing across soil, asphalt, or turf—laterals, yard lines, charger trenches, private runs.
  • You are pairing with 811 marks but need additional imaging at the work point.

Our umbrella entry is GPR & utility locating, with private-side detail on private utility locating.

When you might need both

Depot and charger projects often touch slab exits and exterior runs. We split the deliverable into logical work areas so billing and PDFs stay clear—ask during intake on contact.
